Another Harbor Freight Gem (quick gear clamp) - 18 replies
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen someone post about these before, so hopefully this post isnt completely redundant. I just bought these clamps at Harbor Freight. They were on sale for $12.99. They are awesome! The clamping force is very strong, and it seems like all the important components are metal (not plastic like their other crappy...

tap and die set - 12 replies
Anyone ever use a tap and die (the ones made for metal) on wood? I’ve seen the Wood Whisperer use a tap before in wood, which allowed a bolt to be securely held to the wood. You can see him do this here What about using the die to cut the threads on a dowel??

Riving Knife - 30 replies
I dont know why I havent questioned this before – maybe its because its not my saw (I use my bro-in-law’s wood shop), but I always wondered if I could add a riving knife to his Jet saw. It should have been obvious to me, especially since there is an opening in the plate for a riving knife, but it didnt click until I actually saw the...

Jointer question....almost there!! - 20 replies
So some of you have been following my other forum topics involving my jointer. (click link to see my jointer) I had a lot of trouble getting the bolts out (rusted) to replace the knives. Finally had to cut them off with my Dremel. Couldnt find any bolts that were only 1/4” long. So got 3/8” (grade 8) bolts and cut them down (usin...

HVLP sprayers - need some knowledge - 15 replies
For Christmas, my wife bought me the WoodRiver Pro spray Gun (see it here) There was a poor excuse for an instructional manual that came with it. It literally didnt tell me anything. I’m hoping to get some LJ help…. What can you spray with this thing?? Paint (oil/water based)? finishes? stains? which ones? Do I need to ...

Jointer knife question...(Updated) - 33 replies
I just bought new knives for my jointer, and realized they are not a match to the old ones. The new knives are taller than the knives that come with it. My question is, how far can the knives stick out above the slot in the drum? I already have my old knives out – they are nicked up and need sharpened. I need to use my jointer today. O...

running finish through a planer - 27 replies
I just salvaged an old baby crib someone was throwing away. Made of all solid wood. I took it apart and cut (to length) all that could be saved. The wood has an old finish on it (starting to flake off) – Can this be run through the planer to get all the finish off, or get down to the bare wood? or will this ruin my blades?

Finishing question - 34 replies
I’m making an indoor dog house. My dog likes to sleep under things (tables, beds, etc) but he has no place to do that in our new place. This will double as a side table and his new “house.” I am using the two products you see here….. The Rust-Oleum stain says to use Poly as a top coat…..so i did It al...

I'm about to give up (on my jointer)....... - 78 replies
so I bought this jointer off a guy on craigslist for only $200. Its a Sunhill. He said the majority of its life has been sitting in storage – and it showed. I had to get a lot of rust off of it – mostly surface rust, thankfully. Everything works great, except I can not get these knives out to be sharpened and realigned. I̵...

Nature walk turns into finding cool roots!! - 9 replies
I took my nieces and nephews (and dog) out on some trails today. We hiked for about 2 hours. It was a great time, took some nice pictures, and spent some quality time with each other! The weather was perfect for Iowa—72 degrees! I should have taken more photos of this at different angles…but thought I’d share anyways. This w...

My Best Craigslist find Ever!! - 20 replies
So here’s the story: Guy on craigslist was moving in 2 days and had to get rid of some of his tools in storage. He had a Sunhill jointer that he had listed for $200. I bought it for $150. He also had a Delta drill press: Got that off of him for $200. Dont think I would have gotten it that cheap – except he was desperate to get ...

Cutting board question - 8 replies
I bought a bamboo cutting board for our new condo (I know, I know….why didn’t I make one? Well school has been busy, so don’t have the time, nor the tools to make one to satisfactory…yet). So the directions say to coat it with oil (I’m using mineral oil) every 2 days for a month. This seems like overkill to me. Is ...
