That's a pretty box. So how do you folks do the tops with that curvy stuff? I'm guessing you build a regular-ish box, secure the lid with tape, and then get after it with a chainsaw or angle grinder. Then sand through the grits. Am I close?
rance,
That's pretty much it. I use a 4 1/2" angle grinder and entirely too much hand sanding. I draw an idea for a design on paper and when satisfied with the design I pencil it in on the box and grind away. I have a few that I was somewhat satisfied with and a couple that really got messed up and ended in the burn pile behind the barn. I just recently started making boxes after being impressed with the outstanding work of other Lumberjock boxmakers and craftsmen on this great website. I thrive on a good challenge and love being creative.

Thanks for all the great encouragement. I'm definitely enjoying the building of these boxes. My wife and I are getting ready to drive down to Texas for the week. I wanted to wait until I finished this box before going and it worked out perfect cause today is our anniversary.
I really like the top. Makes me think of sand dunes. I think I would like to try something like that when I get back to making boxes. Did you just glue a piece of walnut on top of the maple or is it inset?
Well done!! I have a soft spot for boxes and really like the wavy carved look. Having tried something similar myself, I can appreciate all the sanding that went into it!!!
