Project Information

Map of the World

I estimate that this map took me 1 million hours to complete. (+/- 999,000 hours)

I used a lot of different exotic woods for this project to give it a contrast of colors.

Of the larger countries:
Canada - Paduak
Russia - Goncalo Alves
China - Bloodwood
Brazil - Yellowheart
USA - Stained Quartersawn White Oak
Australia - Black heart
India - Teak
Greenland - Birdseye Maple
Antarctica - Eucalyptus

Other woods include:
Purpleheart, Cocobola, Leapardwood, African Mahogany, Wenge, Birdseye Maple, Holly, Honduras Rosewood, Bocote, Bubinga, Canarywood, Ipe, Chechen, Cumaru, East Indian Rosewood, Jatoba, Figured Walnut, Osage Orange, Shedua, Zebrawood,

The Frame measures 8×4 feet and was probably the most difficult part - the outer frame was made from Beech and the longitude and latitude lines were alder as they bend well when steamed.

Lastly, I added RGB LED lighting behind the continents to glow into the wall and outline the continents at night. This greatly added to the difficulty but was definitely well worth it.

One o the best World Maps I've seen! Can we see a picture of it lit up? Also what are the dimensions?

The map measures 8×4 feet and takes up a fairly large wall. I'll take some pics of the lighting soon and add them

Nice map. You don't state the size, but it looks like it takes up a pretty good bit of wall space. That's the sort of thing businesses like to put in their lobby areas. Too bad it takes 685 years to make one. If you could produce a quantity of them I'm sure they'd sell.

This is awesome! It must have been difficult keeping up with the tectonic plates shifting on you during the build….

Vandy,

This is a very impressive map. We'd love to see more pictures. Maybe you could do close-ups of each continent.

You should get together with fellow LJ Marco and display your map along with his globe.

Wow, this is a great looking map. With it's size, you could probably sell it to Specter. Seriously, an impressive job and great result on this very large piece.

This is outstanding.

I have seen the Globes made of different rocks for years - but now wood… This is awesome.

I agree with dakkar, if you could figure out how to make more than 1 in a life time, global businesses would eat this up.
