Project Information

I had a lot of small scrap pieces left over from other projects and didn't want to waste it all so I decided to make an Edge Grain table top out of it. Its made from Walnut, Hickory, Hackberry, Oak, Maple and Cherry. I started by cutting planing everything to 3/4 thick and ripping it to 1 1/4. I cut pieces to random sizes from 12 to 32 inches long. When it came to assembling I just randomly placed pieces to avoid any patterns. When finished I realized it was to "busy" so I took a 1/4 thick piece of maple and placed it between every two lines to break it up a little. It ended up almost 26×63 and I cut it down to appx 22×48 and sanded it down to 240grit. It is finished with 5 coats of Glossy Polyurethane.

That's a work of art; great job! And nice shop too.

One question though; can you tell me if this was first intended to be end grain and then you chose not to after? I see in your write up you mention End Grain but to my slightly better then untrained eye that doesn't look like end grain?

Ya know, I see a lot of projects on this web site labeled as "scraps".
My problem is I don't have scraps that good looking.
Great table…...................

Forget the table, that shop is the real work of art. Some serious size, organization, and tools. And the tabletop is nice, but damn that is a great shop.

Wow, what a great way to use up "scrap" wood!

While not end-grain, it's one of the nicest edge-grain table tops I've seen!

Fantastic build, and a fantastic shop as well!

That is really beautifull. That top deserves a set of legs to match. Great use of material. As someone who cannot get myself to throw scraps away I love projects like these.

I'm not normally a mix 'n' match guy, but I like that table top a lot.

Nice job! I'm wanting to do a table but am nervous about ripping the boards to width. Have a planer so that part is OK. Your thoughts are welcome.

I ripped all the boards to about 1 1/4 or so then planed and sanded to 1 inch.
