Project Information
Jeannie Bottle.
In 1965, NBC introduced the TV sitcom I Dream of Jeannie staring Barbra Eden. Barbra played a scantily clothed 2000 year old genie; that would come out of her bottle and grant her owner (Larry Hagman) anything he wished for. You can well imagine the effect that this might have had on a young adolescent like me. To say I have always dreamed of owning such a bottle would be an understatement. So I figured, having not found one as of yet; maybe, just maybe; if I build one; she will come.
The inspiration for this piece came from Kevin Neely's web site. As soon as I saw Kevin's Jeannie Bottle, I knew I would have to give one a try. Using the picture from Kevin's site, and a bit of my own imagination; I was able to cut up 159 pieces of wormy oak and walnut; rearrange, glue back together and turn to a form that is quite pleasing (in my humble opinion). Not exactly like the original network bottle used, but I think it's just as nice. My Jeannie Bottle stands 12 inches high and 8 inches in diameter. The finish is Waterlox Original Tung Oil.
This was a really fun project to complete. I actually finished this one up about a month ago; but was reluctant to post it anywhere on the net. This project was built with the intention to enter it in our guild's president's challenge. Tonight was that challenge in which I am flattered to have finish second in the intermediate class; among some very nice wood turnings.
