Project Information

Like many Jocks, I create new wood projects and hand them over to friends and family! So, my house is project barren! Having designed and built humidors for everyone else, I decided my own retirement from the Navy rated one humidor for myself. So, here's the humidor that now sits in my living room and if you happen to pass my home in Rochester, pop in. There's a cigar waiting for you! I'm not giving this one away. Max

I've been wanting to build a humidor for a while now, and this is a beautiful inspiration. Can you give us some insight into the functional design of this piece?

Beautiful humidoor!

A couple of elements intrigue me:

1) What are the materials and construction details on the top?
2) what method did you use to cut those large miter key slots?

Here are some answers to your question.

I'm not sure what to say about functional design. I'm not clear on what that means. Re: materials and construction details on the top - Long story made short, I used some remaining teak wood that I obtained from the re-commissioning of USS WISCONSIN BB 64 in 1987. I used strips of Holly to create the sense of a ship's deck. Re: method used to cut those large miter key slots - I created a 45 degree slanted finger jointing jig to run the mitered box over the stacked dado blades. I have photos of the jig but, I still need to figure out how to post them in these comments! I'll send them. Max

I'll be more specific. Is the lining Spanish Cedar? Where is the humidifier? How many cigars will it hold? Things of that nature.

JP,
The lining is Spanish Cedar. I did some research and learned that Spanish Cedar was the best wood for maintaining the consistency of humidity inside the box. Seems to work well but, I don't like the wet spots that appear. I think that means the cedar is not dry enough. I can deal with that. Re: the humidifier, I have yet to buy one! They're pricey so, I'll hold out until later. You can find them online or your local smoke shop. Since my wife doesn't appreciate my once in a while cigar smoking habit, I only smoke them when my navy friends stop by or the NY Giants win - not often! This could be a smoking year however, if Manning keeps the offense moving. Re: how many cigars will it hold - That depends on the size of cigar you store in it. I never filled it but, I believe you could get 30-40 (6-7") cigars in this box. If you're interested in building this box I can draw up some plans for you. Most of what I do is in my head! I seldom draw detailed plans. I make gestural drawings only. Max
