Project Information

I am ready to ship this beauty back East tomorrow. The handle wood, quilted cherry and padauk, was hand selected and sent to me by a fellow LumberJocker. (who will remain anonymous because I don't want to possibly ruin a surprise gift.) The hoop is made up of Cherry ringed by wenge. This is a boat net, so the handle is longer to reach down into the water. The bag is black rubber. It looks better than clear, but hooks don't stick to it, and no fishy smell. I hope this person likes it. It needs to be seen to appreciate (as with most ww projects.) I tried to capture different views on a Nikon D40. I LOVE this camera! Enjoy.

Really nice. Great selection of woods. Someone is going to be very happy. The only way that net could look better is to have a 6lb. large mouth in it. lol

Where did you get the netting material? I have 2 similar nets and have not been able to find the source for that netting. It is MUCH better on the fish as well as not getting hooks stuck in the netting.
Also, your net is much nicer than my 2. You've done a great job!

This is a such a beautiful piece, and the fact that it's a surprise gift for someone makes it that much nicer.

I'm also curious about where you sourced the netting from?

Did you use something like spar urethane on it, or something else similarly made for the outdoors/frequent water contact?

This really is great. I even like the gradual taper you have on the handle itself… noticeable, yet not extreme enough to deter the functionality of the piece.

Beautiful pc. of artwork. This will be a fantastic surprise for someone. Did you steam bend the hoop?

Gotta love those Nikons. I use a D-90…well actually it's my wifes….I just "borrow it"..alot.

Wow Greg,

I just checked out your website and you make some truly stunning pieces. I'd have to agree with Chip when he said "a functional piece of art".

If anyone reading this project post is inspired by this piece, I'd encourage you to go check out Greg's website for even more great pieces! I don't know Greg at all, so this is not some silly plug for a buddy. I'm just saying he's got several dozen more pictures of other nets of this caliber on his site. Check it out!

Looks great. How was the wenge to bend? That stuff can be a bear to work with.

And +1 on the Nikon camera's. Never used the D40, I have a D300s and love it tho.

What a beauty! I love how the red of the Padauk accents the Quilted Cherry and the richness of the Wenge tops it off well too. Someone is going to be very happy!

Very nice fishing net for sure, I hope he'll be using this on a clear trout stream and not the Mississippi.

Why is wenge use in so many of them? Any particular structural reason?
