Project Information

A Canarywood & Padauk jewelry Box I just completed. Sculpted using my "old school' sculpting style. 10.25" x 7" x 6" and finished with lacquer. I originally intended to use a danish oil finish but after using it on some sample scraps I decided it was too dark.

Interesting box. is there a 4" angle grinder involved with your version of old school?

Thanks for posting.

Your box is absolutely magnificent. The excitement it inspires is unbelievable. The combination of woods and texture gives it a surreal look that sets it apart from all other boxes. A true work of art from a true artist. Thanks for inspiring

Thanks for all the positive comments.
Sculpting these is definitely a sawdust generating monster. I do shape it with an angle grinder and then sand and sand and sand. Gives my downdraft table and dust collection a serious workout.

I did make a removable divider tray for it but realized it had a splintery split in it so I am making another and will photo it when done. The box bottom and the tray have a leather lined bottom.

Do you have any photos of the end result of the saw trestle work?

The box looks good too, up to your usual brilliant standard.

Awesome work, Greg. Every time i see one of your posts I take a second to look at my angle grinder and think to myself, "some day…""

Have you ever posted videos of the process? I know I'd watch…

Better to make dust with that angle grinder instead of letting it gather dust. (an old saying i just made up). The angle grinder is easiest to use when I am able to control the speed. That is why I bought one with a variable speed control (Makita)..I tried an angle grinder that worked with my air compressor and that was a joke because it only had one sppeed that seemed like 26,000,000 rpm.
As far as a video…I am 70 and have never in my life filmed a video…so I don't see one in my future.

Rob, I'm not sure whaT you mean by saw trestle work. If it is what i call saw horses…well I don't use them when sculpting. I made a sculpting downdraft table that makes life easier for creating these and keeping dust to a minimum… I made it using the adjustable base from a welding table

Hooked up to the dust collector and in an enclosed small room. I still always wear a dust hood when in there
