Project Information

This Pacific yew chest was included in Taunton's 2011 book titled Blanket Chests, authored by Peter S. Turner and Scott Gibson. It measures 36" x 21" x 17" high.

The lid was coopered and features a void between two live edges that serves as a handle. The lower half of the chest wass carved to follow the grain and the corners were dovetailed. I had barely enough wood to complete the chest, so that was an continuing challenge. So much in fact that the bottom was made from 24 pieces of yew glued together in a brick-like pattern.

The chest was finished with orange shellac. To compliment the chest, I could not find any suitable hardware in stores so I forged the strap hinges and handles. The hardware was fastened with clinched cut nails.

The "Treasure" is the chest, not its contents. Very nice.

very very awesome. I really like the forged straps and handles. I'd like to see a blog on doing something like that. even tho it's metalworking, not woodworking. wood & metal go gr8 together

Thanks for the comments and feedback, Roger. The next time I make hardware like this, I will document the process to share on my blog. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Chris
