Project Information

After I had been involved in woodworking for a few years, I was awestruck when I saw my first photo of a Sam Maloof Rocking chair. I told myself that someday I would like to be able to produce something that beautiful out of wood. A few years ago I stumbled on Hal Taylor's website, and after finally talking myself into it, I took the plunge and purchased Hal's plans. I must admit, I was a little apprehensive. The joinery looked complex, and the shaping looked like it would require an artists touch (which I surely don't have). Never-the-less, Hal was reassuring that I could do it. He is also true to his word when he says on his website that he is only a phone call or e-mail away, if one of his customers needs assistance. Well I started this project months ago, and finally finished it today. I certainly wouldn't claim to have reached the aesthetic beauty of a Maloof rocker, but considering it came from my own hand, I am very satisfied with the results. I was very saddened last year when I heard that Sam passed away. He was an inspiration to so many woodworkers. I am sure his influence will be felt for many generations to come. RIP Sam.

It's fantastic
We have all seen a piece by Sam Maloof that we "WILL" build some day, but you did it !

I can only imagine what it must feel like to have undertaken and completed this project.
Thanks for posting.

Fantastic - Sam would be proud of you I'm certain!

I think the contrasting plugs are a great touch.

Wow! I don't comment on furniture much since I have no experience building same, but your chair has got to be one of the prettiest pieces of woodworking art that I've seen anywhere.

An heirloom indeed!

I love your chair. I've been thinking about building one for some time. I guess it's time I sent Hal some money and get started… Walnut, maple or cherry? I can't decide which one to build it from.

Very nice and probably a comfortable chair. I really liked the curve of the back.

How many hours? I couldn't begin to guess. The next one will go much faster because a lot of time is spent on building jigs, forms, and little "tools". This chair is made out of maple. The plugs are padouk. The finish is Deft Stain and Finish, (neutral).
