Project Information
After I had been involved in woodworking for a few years, I was awestruck when I saw my first photo of a Sam Maloof Rocking chair. I told myself that someday I would like to be able to produce something that beautiful out of wood. A few years ago I stumbled on Hal Taylor's website, and after finally talking myself into it, I took the plunge and purchased Hal's plans. I must admit, I was a little apprehensive. The joinery looked complex, and the shaping looked like it would require an artists touch (which I surely don't have). Never-the-less, Hal was reassuring that I could do it. He is also true to his word when he says on his website that he is only a phone call or e-mail away, if one of his customers needs assistance. Well I started this project months ago, and finally finished it today. I certainly wouldn't claim to have reached the aesthetic beauty of a Maloof rocker, but considering it came from my own hand, I am very satisfied with the results. I was very saddened last year when I heard that Sam passed away. He was an inspiration to so many woodworkers. I am sure his influence will be felt for many generations to come. RIP Sam.
