Project Information

Curly maple box with mahogany dividers. The inlay came from Rockler. The joinery is hidden mitered dovetails that went wrong. When I dry fitted the joints the miters were open so I planed the corners off and added an 1/8 inch square of ebony. Finish is Zinser seal coat french polished. Cant remember how many coats but there were many.

It's beautiful! Nothin' wrong with hiding your mistakes, that is one of the most important skills in woodworking. And you did an excellent job. I like the corner strips a lot.

My only disappointment is that you didn't give us that third picture! Don't we get to see the inside and your mahogany dividers?

LOL, as has been saidl many times here….necessity is the mother of invention. The joints look great, the ebony looks great on the corners. Great box.

Blake is right about hiding mistakes! Either hide them or incorporate them into the design.
Great box!

You didn't need to rat yourself out, other than the fact that it does encourage others to keep going and think on the fly when things go wrong in their projects. I think this is one splendid small wooden box. And I just love small wooden boxes (Northern Hemisphere Division)!

Yes, all the above and I love the cheeky looking dovetails on the tray.

That box works. The dovetails look crisp, and that is a cool inlay.

Must be a special niece for such a special box!

You have to be the favorite uncle!

She is (but I'm biased). I can assure one and all that John is a favorite Uncle. My daughter absolutely loves the box. It's prominently displayed on her dresser. btw, we never knew he made any mistakes. We just thought it was a beautiful box!

I try my best not to make any mistakes , however , sometimes the mistakes add more beauty once a fix is found than the original plan called for !!! hahahaha If we didn't learn by our mistakes , where would we be today ? Great workmanship !!!
