Project Information

This is the first of a series of jewellry boxes based on a sort-of made up sci-fi mythical place called Enndorr (apologies to anyone who already uses the name - it just sounded cool!). They will basically be boxes using a similar design to this one only with different woods.

This particular design was commissioned by an acquaintance of my wife's (and was just picked up 1/2 hour ago) and is made of Arbutus for the basic carcass, Birds-eye Maple for the "moon" and drawer fronts, Arbutus for the necklace frames and fir and maple for the drawers and their own 'mini-box'. The feet are of Rosewood and do not run all the way from side to side but extend in only about 6" from the outside edge.

Yes, Paul, I managed to get the doors to close properly! The next one, which I am already working on, utilizes Black Walnut, Maple (plain and Curly) and Spalted Alder! Sounds like a wierd combo but seems to look good when you put the woods together!

What an interesting design. I've never seen anything like this. Good work. Bet she liked it a lot.

Nice box. The "moon" does truly evoke Luna.
I was expecting a reference to the planet in the original Star Wars trilogy that goes by the same name (albeit spelled Endor). Hopefully you don't get a call from George Lucas' lawyers. ;-)

That's where it came from!!! You know for the life of me I couldn't remember where I had heard it and me a sci-fi buff from way back (I won't say how far!). Suffice it to say, except for a similarity in name, these boxes will look nothing like Endor (I hope). And yes, Gary, she fell head over heels for it. The closure with the moon really intrigued her - she couldn't stop playing with it! It looked nothing like what she had imagined when we discussed the design, woods, etc., even though I made half a dozen drawings from all perspectives for her, even in colour. Mind you, it's almost impossible to describe the colour of woods, especially Arbutus. At least I had a couple of tea caddies done in it to show her what the heartwood (red) would look like when finished.

Nicely done Jamie, I knew you'd get the hinges working. I wouldn't worry about George. I doubt that he's a Lumberjock :)

I'm having a hard time getting a sense of scale on this fine looking box. How big is it?

Russ - Sorry 'bout that. It is approximately 18" long x 12" high and 9" deep. The 'moon' on the front is a 5" diameter circle - in fact, I used the top of a blank CD bulk pack to draw the circle. The feet are 1-1/2" wide and support the box 3/4" off the surface of whatever you put it on! That should give you some idea of the scale.

Thanks, Jamie. That helps. From the pictures I was guessing it was a lot smaller, but that didn't make a lot of sense.
