Project Information

Solid Mahogany finished with Danish Oil.

Story
I started these at least 2 years ago and finally finished today. Yeah!

His and her nightstands based on the Shop Drawings for Craftsman Plans book drawings with a few changes. I added a back panel to the nightstands so that books would not fall through.

Details

The sides are frame and panel. I cut the arch and then routed the groove with a slot cutter and berring guided bit. I tried to use the lighter colored woods as a design element by running it horizontally.

The rails are connected with dadoes and mortise/tenon.

The top was attached with pocket screws.

You complete me.

The two tops are cut from the same boards so that when arranged on the two sides of the beds the grain completes a pattern.

I love the grain on the front of the drawers. It shimmers.

The drawers are 3/4" front and back and 1/2" sides. 1/4" solid floating panel. Drawers run on wood runners.

I am going to buy glass for the top to protect from water glasses etc.

I Just saw these pop up on 'Pulse' so I was checking it out when my wife walked by and said 'Those are beautiful!'. They are very nice. Another project to place on my list says the wife.. :)

Great work as always, Jon. I'm sure your children will cherish these some day. ;-)

If my sweetie were to see these, I'd be in the same boat as Jamie.

Great job John, the curves add a lot to the look. Nice finish.

very nice, nice proportions and looks well crafted.

Normally the curve on the side gable would line up on the same elevation as the curve on the front….....but some how that works very well indeed.

Great design and fabulous execution of the design.

Too bad that the two drawer fronts couldn't have made from the same board so that the grain would move across both drawers.

Thanks for the comments.

Ahhh. Karson. They actually are from the same board! I just had to resand the left one a little more before finishing so it looks lighter. It is waiting for more sunlight.

You can see it here a little bit better. The bottoms drawers had this crazy curvy pattern. Up close you can see a vein of dark wood that matches each of the drawers.

Giz,

I remember your discussion on these pieces last year, so I've got to ask… where did you get the knobs from?

They turned out great!

Ethan Thanks. You gave me a kick in the pants to finish. Thanks again.

VanDyke's Restorer sells the knob for around two bucks. Mahogany with threaded inserts and a screw for around $1.50

Great work, John. Great selection on the wood to create the effect you wanted. It looks like paintings on the easel in the background. Who is the artist?

Very nicely done! I like the Stickley design with two smaller drawers and a shelf - very functional. Beautiful use of the Mahogany.
