Project Information
This was a simple project with almost no joinery, basically just a sculpting project.
This was a request from my wife to have a nice bar on the wall to display antique kimono belts.
The wood is walnut.
In order to sculpt the anthers and filaments on the flowers I used a clever trick I learned online from netsuke carvers.
Before I reached the final depth of the petals, I punched the anthers and filaments shapes in the wood with some fancy metal punches (OK, just old ground nails…). Then I just continued to cut away the wood until I reached the level of the punched parts. Finally, a little boiling water on a rag and the compressed wood sprang back to its former thickness, making the flower's reproductive organs pop out. I found this to be a very neat trick.
2011 May 7th Edit : as per Jamie request, uploaded 2 pictures of the hanging bar in use. The decorative samurai armor model is displayed on May 5th for the children festival and I did not take it out yet.
