Project Information

My Mom has been hinting for bookends for quite awhile now, for her cookbooks. Just couldn't come up with the right design. Not sure this is the winning design - but I will find out tomorrow…(Celebrating Mom's day on Friday - schedules are tough these days!).

I used Sapele for main boards and book-matched laminations of Padauk, Wenge and Mahogany. All edges beveled at 15⁰.

The brass was from a door kick plate I picked up at Menards.

Four coats of blond Shellac and buffed on the Beall Wood Buff.

Pretty fun, simple project. Thanks for looking.

I´d know she will like it so much. Because anything done with love by Jeff, and on top very useful, will be a grateful gift .

sCraps? Common David, Jeff has been keeping all those nice little pieces for this present, didn´t you Jeff?

David, Rowdy and Fernando - thanks for the comments! But don't tell my Mom that I used scraps for her gift! Actually the Sapele and the Padauk were not scraps by my definition but the Wenge and Mahogany were from these long skinny little pieces that are hard to find uses for, so may be scraps….....:)

And Fernando - you are right - I could give my Mom some 2×4's nailed together and she would (seemingly) be happy!

Thanks for the laughs!

Very nice and I do believe your Mom enjoy her new book ends. To me they are 3 dimensional and I can not say I have ever seen any like it. Good design and a great gift.

Occie - thanks for the comments - I hope you are feeling better…...you have some interesting stuff going on in Costa Rica (the hollow log…what became of it?)

I don't throw away scraps - and I hope I don't have to live through someone "cleaning" my shop…...Thanks for posting…..

And Dave - I guess I did notice the 3D aspect of these - from staight on, it's hard to see the depth…...this is another example of design as you go. Started out with just the single layer of laminations and then….....hey, what can I do with these cutoffs…........

Thanks.
