Project Information

This is one of the finer things I've built and it offered several technical
challenges. The doors were a real challenge. The veneering was easy,
but shaping the serpentine rails was tricky. I used a router table for
the door frame, using a straight bit and a template to excavate the
groove for the panel and a round-over bit with template a bearing for
the lip. I got all four right on the first try, which surprised me because
I was sure I would ruin one or two getting the method down.

I cut the tenons by hand, with the help of a bandsaw for the cheeks.
It took a lot of fiddling at the bench to get the tenon shoulder to fit
right.

Walnut, finished with shellac and wax.

I like that curved front a lot.

Excuse my ignorance: Were those rails for the doors steam-bent? Form bent?

Work good. But simple. Where фрезеровка on panels?

Millo, They were cut out on a bandsaw and then shaped to
a template.

I thought about steam bending them but I didn't want to mess
with the two curves and spring-back too much.

I also thought about laminating them but I didn't want the glue-lines.
In the end I decided to just cut them out because it seemed like
the most straightforward way to do it.

The benefit of steam bending is I could have profiled the rails
first. I could have built-in the groove if laminating. Those were
both attractive options and I was certainly taking a risk by cutting
out the parts and making the groove with a straight bit. It
turned out okay though. I think a pin router setup would have
been the best way to cut the groove, in retrospect.

The door panels were laminated on a form using a vacuum bag
system.

Loren did you bend the rails on this or did you band saw them from a bigger block of wood?
