Project Information

This segmented hollow vessel is made of 234 pieces of pine. I used a gloss wipe on poly for the exterior and tung oil for the inside and bottom.

The story behind this piece is my capturing the empty feeling caused by the death of my younger brother Sam this past October.

The over all shape, while close to the original design, is off a little I think… what are your thoughts?

Darryl,

The vessel is really lovely. The missing pieces show off how uniformly thin the walls are. It must have been an incredible challenge to turn (or did you remove the pieces after turning?) Thanks for sharing.

Darryl, The jagged hole in the vessel must match the hole in your heart, a loss like that would never be easy! Please accept my condolences! This is a very meaningful piece and one to be treasured! It is beautiful.

Beautiful turning of the hollow vessel. The hole in the vessel is symbolic of the pain in your heart on loss of your younger brother. Let his sole lie in peace.

Hey Darryl, thats a pretty jagged piece just riped out, your young brother Sam understandably left a big hole in your world, that is one very lovely jig saw of life as you see it right now,
I guess this piece will always be around you, a powerful treasure, I am sure Sam will just love the shape / design :)))

Thank you everyone for your kind and supportive words. Creating this piece has helped me in ways I cannot explain.

On the technical aspect of the piece, the missing segments were left out during the final glue-up. Turning really wasn't much of an issue. Sanding though did require a sanding block. The overall size is approx 6" x 6".

thanks again.

I'm sorry for you loss Darryl. This piece is true art as it expresses sincere and heartfelt feelings, something mere objects cannot do. This was a very positive way to express your grief and work through it.

that is really cool….one question--does the hole/opening compromise the strength…? of course its an art piece!!! so that is not as impt…just curious…

I don't think the hole weakens the piece at all Napaman. It held up during turning, I can't imagine it will encounter anything else as stressful as that now!

Thank you everyone for your support.
