Question

70,000 Ontario public workers make over $100,000 a year
Ontario has released it's annual "sunshine list" - the names and salaries of all public sector workers making over $100,000. Do our civil servants make too much?

It's the same dynamic in the US. Several years ago, a study indicated that Government employees trailed the private sector significantly. Salaries were adjusted and the pay scale was changed. The system has remained that way. Now they did a study and found that Government employment is the one sector with sustained salary growth. I have worked for the Government in one capacity or another for over 20 years. When there is recession, the Gov. employees tend to take the hit, because the work is stable and attrition is much less than the private sector.

What ever become of a merit based system of compensation? Why do government employees insist on a seniority based system. At least their unions do. One of the major contributing factors in causing recessions over the last eighty years is the rise in "red tape" and goevenment bureaucracy. Ask yourself this, Why is it that government entities operate at a fraction of the efficiency of simmialr models in the pivate sector.

As the governmet grows larger there will be a smaller tax base to support it. The smaller tax base will have to pay increased taxes to support the larger government. The increased taxes leads to a decrease in productivity. The reduction in productivity is a direct result of more taxes and government regulations. More taxes equal less pofit, less profit equals less to pay for the cost of running the business, The decrease in productivity leads to more demands placed on the government. This leads to the need for more government workers.
As the government grows larger…

Does the word cannibalism come to anyones mind here?

Whay does this have to do with woodworking? Let's see, for most on this site. The more time spent working to support a government the less time spent woodworking. Or for those who woodworking pays the bills, it's a case of less income, more taxes.

Hail to Devann! I appreciate a blog now and then that allows us to get to know one another a little better. It is a boring place when the topics are always so narrow- jigs, jigs and then there's jigs. :) (Not that there's anything wrong with writing about jigs- that is always good and useful) but it's nice to stretch a little sometimes.

Hi GMman,
I do also support both Darrell & Kelly.

Either we got involved in woodworking for business or hobby, we join this clan to mutually benefit of different knowledge. But in all cases woodworking is not the 100% of our lifes. As persons we hardly can divide ourselves in woodworkers during a couple of hours, and as social entities during other hours. So we participate here as persons.

So far all participants in this particular topic have a large resume of projects presented for discussion. Meaning that all of you do not come to LJ to discuss only off topics, or politics.

However I do understand the disappointment of Woodklutz and Todd since the title of the blog omitted the Off topic warning. They may have thought that this blog was about a Wood question, and they both might be prepared to answer.

Respectfully, Fernando
