Project Information

My wife enjoys two hobbies - knitting / spinning / dyeing (of wool) and soap making. Both require an infinite number of small bottles of liquid or powder-based dyes, perfumes and various other ingredients. For the most part, these have found a place in and amongst our normal laundry room supplies. Problem is … go for one thing and knock over / send flying several other bottles or containers. Solution … to build a dedicated, wall-mounted unit, with several adjustable shelves. Location … out of the place, but acccessible. Sounds like that wasted wall space behind the laundry room door would be ideal.

The unit measures 32 inches wide, 39 inches tall, and 7-1/2 inches deep. The top, middle and bottom shelves are fixed. In addition, I made four, adjustable shelves (pictures show three, the fourth is resting on top of the unit). I utilized gold-tone, metal pilasters and shelf clips (Lee Valley product numbers 17K40.01 and 17K40.51 respectively).

The main carcass is made out of 3/4-inch birch ply, trimmed in red oak. The backing is a piece of 1/4-inch birch ply, dadoed into the sides, top and bottom shelves. Each shelf edge is trimmed with a 1/4-inch by 1-1/4 inch strip of red oak - providing a sufficient lip that prevents the bottles from being knocked off the shelf. The entire unit has 3 coats of semi-gloss Varathane and is anchored / cleated to the wall.

Nothing sophisticated here. A purely utilitarian project that keeps the better half happy.

That is really a fine looking project! It is a beautiful place to store all those small items and not have things lost in layers of bottles etc. Very nice work!

That very nice. Nothing utilitarian about it - a beautiful piece.
