Project Information
Catalpa Slab bench that is 5' long by approx. 18" wide and 2" thick. It came from a 3 year old slab that had air dried and I had traded for it with a friend for a fruit cherry slab I had. A neighbour wanted a rustic bench so I left alot of the saw marks in the top of the bench and lightly ran a belt sander over the top, then used a wire brush on the grain. I kept the best live edge on for the front of the bench and trimmed the other side off on the table saw. It has two coats of a 1lb. cut of shellac then top coated with a water based polyeurathane. The steel base is from parts at a local plumbing supply store painted with a flat black steel paint. The neighbour was very happy with the result and it is now in her front hall.
