Project Information

The dark knife rack is made from Wenge with a thin sliver of zebra wood covering each of the six 3/4" diameter rare earth magnets I epoxied. The lighter one is Bocote with yellowheart covering the magnets. Each one was finished with butcher bloc oil. I covered each magnet with a contrasting wood to add some flair but also to avoid having the knife blade touch the magnet directly and get scratched. The rare earth magnets are strong enough to hold a variety of chef knife sizes and you simply touch the blade to a "button" and it stays.

Nice looking projects. How did you intend to mount these to the wall / cabinet?

Thanks,

I'm going to cut 2 keyhole slots in the back. Haven't figured out how to do that just yet. I'm trying to decide whether to make the cuts vertical or horizontal. Also, I'm not certain how to make them exactly the same length and on the same plane so each holder hangs level. Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

That's a way of doing it that I haven't seen before. I especially like the grain in the bocote. Nicely done!

I've made something similar but the magnets get inserted from the back.

As for the keyhole slots, a router edge guide or a quick jig for the router to ride against would ensure that the slots are in the same plane. The length can be set by affixing blocks to prevent the router's movement beyond the ends of the slots.

I checked out what you've done and I really like that approach too. Very nice. I think I may adopt your method for attaching them to a wall. Seems easier and more reliable with brass screws than fussing with keyhole slots.

I like how with the plugs they actually look like the handles of many knives with the rivets.
