Project Information

Well, my bed canopy is finished. There are just the minor wearing in adjustments that will be needed. It's hard to believe that this started out as a simple shoe rack because I ran out of space in my warren.
The trolley rolls really well.
Hope you all who have followed the design and construction of my canopy on the blogs enjoy viewing it here.
Thanks

It's official! I have now seen everything.
My wife would kill me if I tried to put my stinky work boots there.
You must be a bachelor. Ha!

The project looks very authentic.
Are you going to paint it gray with a little rust so it looks real? That would be cool.
Nice job.

Actually, my boots don't stink because [1] I don't work; I have a terminal liver illness, and [2] I have always sprayed my foot apparel with Lysol®. Plus I have very good hygiene.
As far as women getting nervous, I'm too old to find one to participate in research of that query but the ones I was fortunate to be in the company of in my younger years in the beach cities and university towns of Cali and Austin, Texas, would have experienced an emotion more of interest and intrigue than worry.
Thank you all for the positive comments. Obviously, this was built just for fun by an engineer.

At first glance, I thought you were Rube Goldberg's kid brother, then I took a second look, and it is actually
very functional, if not something everyone would want. Thank you for sharing and making us think, I wonder
if i could modify this and make it fit.

I like the snacks, remote, etc. idea. It would be convenient….I don't want to paint it because [1] I don't believe that I know how to disassemble it. ;-0 and [2] it is better that it demonstrate what can be done with wood. I've made cogs with wood using a sprocket to create an indexing table. [see photo above and: http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/woodnews/july_2006/readercont_july06.html]
Thank you alll once again for your kind comments.

Love this project. What kind of wood did you use? How did you cut the many holes? Looks like the dowels are functional (go all the way through). Are they held in place with glue?

I sawed some of the holes with hole saws and cut the larger ones with a circle cutter. The dowels are functional and some of them are glued in with the exceptions of the ones that make it possible to disasemble it, at the head board and foot board. The three quarter inch ones in the third row down from the top of the main girders are removable so the short vertical support pieces between the shoe rack and main span can be removed. Also, the dowels that pin the cross pieces to the large main girders are removable so it can be completely disassembled.
It pins together like a crane or track hoe.
I want to get four of those square lights for it similar to the ones along the boom of a tower crane. Two on each side. Maybe some of those translucent welders curtains to swag back on each side of the headboard. It's similar to playing with Tinker Toys only I get to build the components too.

Props to you Sir!

I grew up in Austin, Texas! What a cool town! Have you been there lately?

I can just imagine you back then, strolling down 6Th street with a couple of UT college girls on each arm in those cotton summer dresses and cowboy boots.

Ah…..the good ol days.

Love your imagination and sense of humor.

Definitely a lovable over-the-top solution. Maybe useful in the shop too?

Boy howdy, huh. That's what I'm talkin' 'bout. It's fun when others get the concept of a twisted but harmless sense of humor.
No, unfortunately I haven't been there in some time but you do cut it clearly, "A couple of young college girls in cotton summer jumpers, sandal toed heels, painted nails, one on each arm strolling down Guadalupe or Sixth Street….." Sounds almost like fun doesn't it? Or how 'bout skinny dipping out at Lake Travis? It was all tuff but someone had to pick-up the slack and being the selfless person that I am….
The girls in Texas just as in Cali, sure are cuties and fun too.

DYNO360 ask about the wood and being old and spacey I neglected to address that inquiry. Some of it is MDF which as it turns out is actually pricey, and much of it is a particle board that is used as an underlayment for flooring. I buy these at Home Depot [I love Home Depot!] I even obtain some of the materials at our local ReBuilding Center. http://rebuildingcenter.org/. I'm on a very low fixed income so I'm very poor so I can't spend a lot on entertainment but I get by….

I don't mean to high jack this thread but…..

how 'bout skinny dipping out at Lake Travis?

I remember Hippie Hollow!
1974 - Whole hippie families would be out there, all running around naked!
It was considered wholesome and natural.
You could skinny dip at blue hole too, upstream from Zilker Park. So many memories!.

I used to skip school and drive out there with a bunch of CO ED friends.
It was a blast except, I could never come out of the water!

Go ahead, I'll be right there! Ha!

You couldn't do that now days. You would be arrested.

That's one and Pale Face one of the others. Isn't that disgusting, you would be arrested. It's ridiculous! Let's have another law!
This state is really bad about wanting and creating more laws about nothing. Nanny Government. Why would I want to think for myself when I can have 'Nanny government' do it for me. :^(
Americans have too much free time on their hands, they need to get constructive hobbies and forget about more legislation….

Let's take a vote: What do you guys think about a cart on wooden rollers on top of the girders for storage? Or mirrors just in case an attractive youngster makes the mistake of thinking older guys are not the worst thing in life.
