Project Information

I made this box just for fun with the leftovers from cutting two larger wine cork displays. It's only 7"x7"x2.5" so it won't hold nearly as many wine corks as it's big brothers. While in the finishing stage, my brother really took a liking to it and ask if he could have to put change in. Pretty good idea since everything up to a quarter will fit through the whole.

I finished it with a couple coats of natural and fruitwood danish oil wet sanded with 220 wet/dry sandpaper. After that I put a couple coats of wipe-on poly followed by some paste wax. The rays didn't pop out as much as I hoped but at the right angle you can still see them. Overall I'm real happy with the finish and will probably do the two larger ones the same way. I like how the the walnut miter splines are almost dark enough to pass as ebony.

Any comments or feedback will be appreciated. Thanks.

Now that is pretty nifty. I wish I seen this before Sunday…. I officially fired up "Santa's Workshop" Sunday and have the beginnings of 9 piggy banks for nieces and nephews sitting on my workbench now. I really like the idea of using glass as the front. I got to remember this one for the next batch…

Thanks for sharing David….
