Project Information

Had a vision about bending a cabinet and still making it functional. After few rough drafts, came up with an idea of how to do this. Unsure if I could pull off a full scale, e.i., five-foot tall one, decided to make a model first to work out the bugs and solve fundamental problems on small scale; plus budget didn't permit building full size one as of yet.

Didn't know what dimensions to use building this so winged it. In retrospect, should have made the top square as opposed to rectangular. At least that was the idea in my mind and drawing. Oh well, came out pretty much as I had envisioned.

Was tired of just copying everyone else's designs and ideas so I designed one. Still undetermined as to whether or not to build full scale one yet. Not sure if idea/design would appeal to the general (buying) public.

Basically cut out front, back and bottom from 1/4" plywood, glued together; then, used wood-back maple veneer to run up each side with wood glue. Had to use drop-off pieces of same shape to help clamp in place until glue dried. Full size one would require using 3/8" bendable plywood for the sides. Tiny drawers were pretty tedious with such a small scale. Veneered front, back and drawer fronts with maple and offset with high-contrast of walnut for handles.

Very nice design! Your desire for an original touch has paid off. Here is a blog post I have showing laminate bending. There are several variations, but the basic idea is that thinner strips are bent and glued to form a shape.

Great design. A full size one would be amazing. I agree with Rogue and sras about laminating wood instead of bendable ply, you might get disappointed by the results of engineered ply, though it really does have it's uses! But if laminating solid wood is difficult for you (the right tools, materials, time, energy, money.. etc) or if veneering is your thing… you might want to try laminating several thin sheets of italian poplar as your substrate, which I have come to prefer. But solid wood laminations has an integrity (and challenges) that ply can never match. One suggestion to the design of a full size piece… the artist in me would love to see the top continue much higher than 5 feet of smaller and smaller drawers. :) nice post!

Thanks guys for compliments and comments. I appreciate your input as well. Thanks for suggestions. Not sure if will pursue building larger one or not. Doing the carving thing as of now. So many things to master and can't seem to stay on one thing long enough to do it. Hence the ol' saying "...of all trades, master of none." Hopefully, will settle down and really try to concentrate on one thing. Mind races with new ideas too much. Thanks again.
Thanks for tip, adaughhetee

Thanks for compliments Tom D., Dan Wiggins, Heidi, Dinielle and Travis. Hey Travisowenfurniture, funny how you recommended that site. Never knew that artist was in Fine Woodworking. What inspired me to build this twisted cabinet was THAT artist's work. His "cracked cabinet" was so intriguing to me so I built one like it. I would post it here, but my get in trouble for plagiarism. Never really knew how he makes all those bends. Will look further into that article. Maybe get a clue. Thanks.

Very nice build. In my years of building I found that the bigger the project the easier the build. I use to build minis for doll houses and people wanted the same thing in there house. It was easier to build life size.
