Project Information

Had a vision about bending a cabinet and still making it functional. After few rough drafts, came up with an idea of how to do this. Unsure if I could pull off a full scale, e.i., five-foot tall one, decided to make a model first to work out the bugs and solve fundamental problems on small scale; plus budget didn't permit building full size one as of yet.

Didn't know what dimensions to use building this so winged it. In retrospect, should have made the top square as opposed to rectangular. At least that was the idea in my mind and drawing. Oh well, came out pretty much as I had envisioned.

Was tired of just copying everyone else's designs and ideas so I designed one. Still undetermined as to whether or not to build full scale one yet. Not sure if idea/design would appeal to the general (buying) public.

Basically cut out front, back and bottom from 1/4" plywood, glued together; then, used wood-back maple veneer to run up each side with wood glue. Had to use drop-off pieces of same shape to help clamp in place until glue dried. Full size one would require using 3/8" bendable plywood for the sides. Tiny drawers were pretty tedious with such a small scale. Veneered front, back and drawer fronts with maple and offset with high-contrast of walnut for handles.

i really like this a lot! I dont think full scale would look as good as this scale. As a matter of face I think this IS full scale - these would make awesome jewelry boxes! You could try different shapes, etc. If you decide to make another one, I'd love to see a step by step blog! Shape is great, and i love the wood choices you used. I really like this! I just love creative thinking. This is great as is and will be great however you proceed. The thought is what makes it work and that is your own. Wherever you go with it, it will be a unique piece of art with your own personal touch.
Keep us posted.

My advice: Don't use bending plywood, build forms and do a laminate bend. Check out my page, I do those alot. You may have to do it in two panels on each side but it would be a better solution. A lam bend will give you a free standing bent form that you wont have to wrestle into shape and hope it stays put and you can make it out of what ever you like not just what ever bending ply you can find. It'll be way cheaper too. If you need any help I'd love to give you any pointers I can. And also stop trying to decide and just build the sucker!

Very cool. If this is a scale one, how tall is it? If you build full scale I think it would be nice to make 2- one bending to the right and one bending to the left!

Great and unique design on lateral thinking.

I can imagine how tough was to build. But also rewarding to see the finished piece as you thought.

This looks great. I think the top drawer may be more functional if it was square, thus tall, however I think how it is now helps the look flow much better. It turned out very good, a job very well done!

For a "model" that looks great. I hope the real thing turns out 1/2 as good as the "model".

Okay Jim Jakosh you asked how tall it is. Well let me go measure. Hang on. Okay, it is 18-5/8" tall. Thanks for comment.

Am trying to find out what Rogue is talking about "...doing a laminate bend". Got the curiosity flowing again.
