Project Information

My seven year old daughter wanted to dress as Sacagawea for Halloween. To accessorize her costume I decided to make her a little tomahawk. This was my first lathe project after purchasing a Delta 46-460. I used some 2 X 4 pine for the handle and axe head, and finished it with a red aniline dye and wipe-on urethane top coat. I was fairly pleased with the results, particularly considering my very limited experience with a skew chisel.

On the day of Halloween my daughter decided that she would rather be a witch instead…… Kids, huh? Don't you just love 'em?

You might wanna check and see if her school will let her have it in school… Sadly nowadays, that though made of wood. Can still be considered a weapon which would get her expelled. I state this, because a local kid was removed from school ground by police, and arrested, because he had a plastic battle axe, which was apart of his costume.

Oh cripes, I just noticed the last sentence. well no weapon worries there, perhaps turn her a wand.

It was only intended for her to stick in her belt and carry around our neighborhood, not to take into school. You are probably quite correct that there would have been a hysterical reaction despite the fact that it was modeled after the later combination hatchet and peace pipe variety. Now I think about it that would probably have got me in trouble also - encouraging a child to smoke!

Hmmmmm perhaps you can drill it out to be used as a Pipe and put it up on eBay… someone will buy it.

AT any rate… awesome work.
