Project Information

I made this box for one of our avid quilting friends. The box itself is of quilted maple with koa splines. The lid design is called "Star & Pinwheel" and consists of maple, mahogany, padauk, purpleheart, and Chechen rosewood.

I used a homemade miter sled on the tablesaw, with a stop adjusted to provide an exact 1/2 square. The quilt pattern was glued and pressed onto an 1/8" piece of Baltic birch with a secondary veneer of birdseye maple on the other side (not shown).

That is where I believe that geometrical figures are never ending search for pattern! Very nice and good combination of wood color.

You can have this pattern if you like….

Love this…I have been doing a bunch of research on quilt patterns thinking about how to apply to woodworking. Would love to see the sled you used. How big are the squares… look like about 3/4?

Hey Matthew, thanks for the comments! The squares are actually 1/2" and the sled I used is a standard (homebrew) 45 degree miter sled (i.e., the type used to make picture frames) to which I added a simple stop so that the cut would give precisely even sides to the triangles. The squares are all made out of bandsawn veneers, approximately 3/32" or so in thickness.

Don't know how I missed this when you posted it. Very impressive. Good pattern and wood choice.
