Project Information

I thought this would be a great first project to post. I made this for my grandpa's 75th birthday. I wanted to make him a tractor, but I couldn't find any plans. A week before his birthday, a was over at my neighbors and his little by had this John Deere tractor. I borrowed it and took my measurements for it. Everything was hand made except for the axle an plugs for the wheels.

After I completed it, I showed it to one of my woodworking buddies and he just sat there rolling it back and forth on the table. I knew then that I would have to build a case to keep all the grand kids from playing with it. The plaque reads "A Dad & Grandpa At Heart, But A Farmer Forever!" Made from walnut and maple.

I love the tires, how did you get that effect? Did you turn a cylinder with groovs then cut to make four segments per tire?

Thanks for all the comments, he did love the tractor. The tires where made on the drill press and the table saw. I used a circle cutter on the drill press and then I cut the treads on the table saw with a dado blade by cutting them on and angle. Each tire is made from two pieces with the threads cut in different directions.

Outstanding! Thanks for the info on the tires. What did you use for a finish? Also, let us see the display case when finished.

Great looking tractor and case, but I hope that case opens easily, because even grandpas and great grand
fathers should get to play with their toys, we just take better care of them than the kids, LOL. Thank
you for sharing and telling us how you made the wheels.
