Project Information

Here is the finished result of my latest project. It was a NCO sword display case for my last Platoon SGT I had as a Platoon Leader in the Army. It was a big undertaking for me since it was the first time I used a lot of new techniques and I didn't have any plans to try to go off. I was able to build it using only my cordless drill, palm sander, miter saw, and router. I bought my first router table to help cut the groves for the glass in the door. Fitting the lock and routing its catch. If you look closely at the bottom, you can see that I designed a removable challenge coin rack that sits in the bottom, under the sword. The only thing that I didn't get around to was adding an engraved plate at the top.

Since finishing this project I have invested in an air compressor and several nailers to make life much easier. Hopefully, I can also get a table saw soon. I'll also need to remember to take better photos throughout my next build.

Nicely done, Steve! This project should convince your wife or girlfriend that a table saw is needed next! :)

Amen to that! My wife and I are building a new house in Colorado, so I am excited to finally have the space to set up a proper shop I something that is hard to do in the military when moving around so much).

Great job on that NCO Sword case, I know he will cherrish it forever. I made one for our CSM some 20 years ago. And like you, all i had was a few tools like a circular saw with a straight edge. But the CSM Loved it.
Keep up the work. I assume you are at FT Carson, I was station there from 1993 to 1996 I loved Colorado Springs, my favorite duty assignment. Thanks for posting.
