Project Information
Well this is a first for me in many years. Actually it would have to be the first since I was learning woodworking at high school. I am talking about making 'proper' joints to make a frame as such. Considering all this it has turned out pretty well. Some joints are well…. Not tight, but thankfully not imperative for the structural strength.
The whole idea behind this was that my daughter likes her tropical fish…. and jewellery. So I had this idea of making an arty take on a fish tank. Angel fish are renowned for their like/dislike of one another and often take on themselves in their reflection and give the impression of two fish. I used 3mm MDF and stack cut them on the scroll saw. I then glued the two together and spray painted them because as all you scrollers know, it is sooooo difficult to hand paint every surface when it has so many cuts. So that's the two fish explained.
Initially I wanted something on the top to make it look like the lid on a tropical tank but I ran out of time before I could find anything suitable. So I just left it.
The lookalike iron work is scrolled and doubles as a place to hang earrings. I had some MDF that was covered in a durable plastic paint or something that I picked up when I got free pallets from a tile shop. These MDF boards were used to show case tiles. Which I have also got and yet to do something with. (I'll get there, eventually) Anyway I painted over it with black gloss spray and I am hoping that will hold things together a bit better than just plain MDF and paint.
The wood…. don't know. It is from a pallet, it is very white/pale in colour with a pretty tight grain, which you really can't tell by the picture.
To keep the lightness of the wood I first sealed it with a white shellac sealer then coated it with a couple coats of satin poly.
Oh by the way do you know just how hard it is to photograph a mirror and get a decent picture?
