Project Information

Well first I need to appologize for the quality of the picture. I was rushed to design and build the box. A lady contacted me and wanted something to give her fiance as a wedding gift. He collects boxes. this was on a tuesday night, she was getting married the following tuesday. After going back and forth for a day on the design and wood this is what i came up with. She saw the butler tray i built like this. Basic dovetail construction. The box is black walnut from a piece I had leftover from an 8/4 board. I resawed the board and was able to match the grain all the way around. The top is inset down about 3/16". I'm glad she wanted it this way. Used it to test a design I've been wanting to build for a chest.
The finish is a Polyeurathan, BLO, pure tung oil blend.

I never get tired of looking at walnut and an all the versions of maple that make up the boxes on LJ. Those two woods just get more beautiful with every box. When you think you have seen all the beautiful variations of maple, along comes another even more beautiful than the last.
Beautiful box, and the maple is outstanding.
