Tiny Home Made Plywood and Banding.

I started this as a forum topic http://lumberjocks.com/topics/22441 but the way it's going, it should have been a blog so I'm changing horses in mid stream. To bring things up to speed, I started out fooling around with the idea of thin plywood because I was bored in the shop waiting for finish coats to dry on my real project. It sort of took on a life of it's own. Here's a brief recap:

The first two shots are of a 4" x 8" sheet of 1/16" walnut plywood. I cut the veneers with my woodslicer and ran them through the drum sander each side, then vacuum bagged them.

That was fun but I decided to try something a little stronger so I made this piece the next day. It's about 3/32" and it's five ply wenge and arbutus (madrone)

Wood Door Tints and shades Metal Automotive exterior

It's very stiff. Here it is supported at each end (about 12" span) and is only deflecting about 1/16". This was taken this morning. Last night, fresh out of the vacuum bag the deflection was more than 1/4".

One of the ideas for a use for this stuff that came up on the forum (thanks to rwyoung) was to make a banding log. so with part of the five ply cut into strips, and a few arbutus veneer strips to make up for the plywood having two wenge sides, I set out to glue up the log.

Wood Road surface Beige Rectangle Floor

Here's the glued up banding log, about 15/16" thick and 40 ply.

Next step is to edge glue slices of the log and laminate them between arbutus veneers to form the pattern. This glue-up is in the bag now. No attempt was made to try to get an actual checkerboard effect.

If you have banding, you need something to inlay it onto so I built a plywood box. I would not presume to be in Martyn's league on the tiny box subject and this is in no way a challenge to his reign. It's just a plain little box to try to apply banding to if the banding works out.

Tomorrow I'll try to slice some banding and see if I can inlay the box.

Thanks for looking

Between you and Martyn, this is heading towards the molecular level fast. As always… I'm watching with fascination and interest (and lately, a magnifying glass and tweezers!).

Maybe Martyn is King but you are fast approaching Kingship maybe in another realm so you both can rule! That is tiny and I am surprised you still have your fingers! Anybody but the masters would now be stubby fingered!

I followed up to the very last step re: the banding. It's my lack of knowledge, not your explanation. I don't know what banding is plus I am not sure where / how that little box came to being. How about a novice explanation.

What ever this is going to turn into, I know it is going to be REAL COOL!!!!

I don't recommend using a shop vac around this project. "I'll just clean up a little - Hey! Where did my box go?"

Paul,
This sort of thing requires a very special kind of person to even attempt to do. Really neat. You have no idea how much I can relate to not being able to find a small box. I recently made a greasebox for a friend and now simply cannot find it to send to him. I have look high and low. No way there's time to make another.

Keep working at the stuff at the edges of woodworking. I love it

Micro-Banding

Well, the banding actually sliced and attached to the box so I guess we'll chock it up as a crooked little success. I was giving about 50 / 50 odds on it working out at all.

This is the banding block that was gluing up when I did my entry yesterday. It's 3/16" thick. so it will, when sliced, require a 3/16" recess in the box to inlay it. It's not really pretty, but the object here is to see if it can be done at all. There are certainly lots of places I could have taken more care if this were a real project.
Bumper Wood Tool Audio equipment Machine

Here the strips have been sliced off the block and wonder of wonders, I was able to find the box. (I'm not joking…. it's really easy to lose.)

This is a sort of mini temporary router table I jigged up for this job. It's basic component is the bottom half of my home made pin router setup. I just added a zero clearance veneer and a "fence".

The 1/8" router bit is only up about 1/32" so I'm pretty safe here.

After cutting the box in two on the scroll saw (a little below center of the recess), it's time to miter in the banding. This was done with the scroll saw and stationary belt sander. Again more care could have been taken. After all this is just fooling around.

Now, with the banding glued on, it's time to close off the bottom of the box. I decided to make a striped pedestal from some of the unsliced banding block. First it needed to show banding on all four sides so I made one block out of two as in the photo..

Just for comparison, here's the last banding I made (Demi-Lune Table in my projects) next to this stuff.

I thought I might be able to keep corn in my box but unfortunately, it's not quite big enough. You can get a tic-tac in in but the top won't close fully.

I did come up with one possible use for this little creation - It would make a decent tee….. once!

Thanks for dropping in. I hope you had as much fun with this as I did.

I still have most of the 3/32 plywood sheet left over so if any one else has an idea let me know. I'm bored a lot you know.

Thanks again

Paul

Micro-Banding

Well, the banding actually sliced and attached to the box so I guess we'll chock it up as a crooked little success. I was giving about 50 / 50 odds on it working out at all.

This is the banding block that was gluing up when I did my entry yesterday. It's 3/16" thick. so it will, when sliced, require a 3/16" recess in the box to inlay it. It's not really pretty, but the object here is to see if it can be done at all. There are certainly lots of places I could have taken more care if this were a real project.

Paul, You are a nut and a half. This is pretty amazing. I was in the shop this afternoon trying to come up with a glue-up to make some banding/inlay detail in a trunk I am making for my grand-daughter. You've inspired me. Afterall it's in the details that sets things apart.

It doesn't look like you are bored to me. More like experimental woodworking…....... testing the boundaries.

Makes me smile to see this!!
