Project Information

Yes you read it right. This box is 0.75 cubic inches in volume.

The box is 23mm x 23mm x 23mm (29/32" cubed). Now that is a tiny box.
The wall thickness is 2mm (5/64") as are the pattern stripes.

The stripes are Sycamore, Pau Amarello, English Yew, Padauk and Purpleheart.
The box edging, lipping and base are Ebony.

Glues used are PVA to join the stripes and Cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) to build the box.

Finish is wax over sanding sealer.

Pic 1. The box.
Pic 2. The top.
Pic 3. Bottom and top separated to show interior and lipping and that the pattern is throughout.
Pic 4. Something to give you a visual clue to how small 23mm is.
Pic 5. The wooden box (foreground) with the original paper model (background).

All the wood was from my scrap bin.

The construction is blogged in four parts starting here.

Now that is using every bit of scrap down to toothpick size. Fantastic work on such a scale.

I think LJ's next build competition should be who can make the smallest box; this one would definitely be a top contender.

Really great Martyn! I salute your skill on this atom box… Is there anyone who made the electron, neutron, or proton box? You can be one on the Guiness Book. Thanks for posting.

Thank you all for your continued support. It means a lot to me.

I made this one now in order to get some value for money out of the new glasses. I may need stronger ones now, lol. No more 'tiny' boxes, until the next time.

David, I wouldn't know where to start in building a house. I bow to you abilities and experience in that direction. Some fine and elegant projects you've made too. Thanks also for your humour which continues to keep me grounded.

Rich. There's probably room in there for my treasure as well!
