Project Information

This was my final project for school. Finding the dimensions for this chair was tough, i ended up finding rough overall dimensions and worked from there .I made a cardboard prototype for the whole thing and then poplar ones for pieces to see how it would work, and also to get angles and dimensions to where they looked good. I learned a ton from this build. Id never done bridle joints before or carved a seat or had to make a jig to drill all the spindle holes to match each others angle.
The seat i carved with a gouge and a mallet to get the rough shape, then used a grinder with 40 grit paper to smooth out the roughness, then sanded and scraped to final shape.
Walnut and maple with danish oil and wax for a finish.

EDIT* i forgot to mention this is a George Nakashima design notmy own in case anyone didn`t know this chair.i wanted todo a chair for my final because it was something different for me and i loved the challenge this presented.

Very interesting chair design. I like the contrasting wood. A1Jim's buddy has a good video to show how to carve the seats with powertools (router). I watched it the otherday, but can't remember where the link is. Bet Jim will know.

looks great, just like everyone else said…my question…what school are you going to and where is it located?

That is a stunning chair. I'd bet most woodworkers would only sit in it for a few seconds before getting back up to admire it.

The sitting judgment is he real test. Is the picture before or after someone sat in it? Very nice project.

Well done! You caught the details of Nakashima's design beautifully. I have had the pleasure of getting up close and personal with a bunch of these chairs made by George and his daugther and they are amazing to behold. Your chair is right there with them. You must feel very proud!

Ted, this chair is quite brilliant in it's simplistic design, I love it! I (like you) can not find any dimensions on this chair what so ever. Would you be able post it's dimensions for some of us? It would be greatly appreciated by many I'm sure.
