Project Information

It is good to have a friend with a sawmill and an enormous supply of lumber. One of the perks is that when he finds an interesting piece of wood, he sets it aside for me.

This was the case with a beautiful piece of Sycamore. The tops for both tables were made from the same board and the pictures do not do justice to the wood.

The base is Walnut, which also wraps the tops. The miter keys add just enough diversion.

Outstanding, eye-catching design. And I love the wood choices as well.

May I copy your beautiful design? By the way, what technique did you use to allow for movement? The pics suggest that the mitered walnut wrap is tight against the sycamore, but I'm sure that you made some allowance that is not apparent on my computer screen. Please advise me.

Thank you all for the kind remarks. Hyou know how to make a guy feel good. And Paul, you're free to copy anything you'd like. I know the pictures make things look tight, but there is about 1/32 gap all the way around. I've found that while wood moves, most furniture is kept in a relatively constant environment so that movement is kept to a minimum.

Again, thanks all.

Okay, thanks. I wondered if there was a gap. I recently did an outdoor project-planters-with paneled sides. The movement has been quite dramatic in the harsh outdoor environment of a North Carolina summer!

Beautiful design and choice of wood. I'm just about to start a similar floating top hall table project. I love the miter splines. I may borrow that idea.

Thanks again. That Sycamore didn't look that good in the rough. It wasn't until I started milling it down that the beauty of it came out. At that point, it became too nice not to share. Just shows what you can find under a rough sawn board.

Walnut is my favorite wood and sycamore is my favorite tree. These are beautiful.
