Project Information

This is the first egg in the series…The Presentation Egg.

The egg began as a concept piece, but gradually became a "real piece" as the idea came together. During its creation, it became a commission, and shortly you'll see why.

This egg is the crudest of the bunch, with a much larger hinge assembly than later pieces. It's a bit overbuilt.

In any case, the egg shell is turned from American black walnut. The hinge, turned trim ring, and end caps are made of satine (bloodwood). Inside, the flower is also satine, with petals made of vera, and a base plate made of holly.

The name comes from the surprise inside. In this case, the bottom trim cap rotates, and as it does the flower inside rises out of its petals and gradually opens, revealing an engagement ring. Although I wasn't present, I understand the result was nothing short of amazing.

There is also a box that holds this egg, but I don't have a good picture of it.

In any case, this became the basis for the additional eggs, that now number 8. There are plans or sketches for a dozen more, with some pieces of different ones laying around the shop. In all likelihood, the next one to be completed will be the Carousel Egg, which will contain a small, carved carousel horse, along with an appropriate music-box movement hidden in the lower shell. Yes, it's possible to make that all fit. No, it's not easy.

One is just more amazing than the next! The thought and planning that goes into them are some else! I just don't know what to say. It is beautiful.

Nice job. Maybe its just my monitor, but I can hardly see the 3rd & 4th pics. These pieces are REALLY intriguing. Maybe you would consider blogging the build of the mechinism for this or another one of your eggs?

Simply functional beauty. I have always been fascinated with works of art that are "More Than Meets The Eye" (sorry I had to steal that straight off the Transformers…lol)

I am sure I am not the only one looking forward to seeing many more of these down the line.

Very well done and thanks for sharing!

Maveric, you have come closer than you know.

The current project in the shop is to build a "transformer." However, like all things, there is a hitch.

I have combined the concept of a robot standing up with a Wooten desk. So….in one form, he appears to be a robot, standing about 6 1/2 feet tall, made of purpleheart and trimmed with many other exotics. However, in his alternate ego form, he is a computer desk, with interior compartments a la Wooten.

Thus far, I have more or less completed the legs, and currently the carcass for the body is underway. There are many "transformer" elements, including a set of swinging legs that support the desk leaf when it is down. I will be posting more about this, including some pictures, sometime in the future.
