Project Information

So I suppose I should start my first post with my best-so-far furniture piece.
It started with finding some cheap gorgeous cherry at a lumber store and I just had to make something with it.
I had been wanting to do something to hide the ugly clothes hamper for some time.

The top is curly cherry with walnut miter keys and curly maple inlay. The sides are curly maple resawed and bookmatched and glued to a MDF substrate. Walnut inlays were glued in and a cedar lining was glued to the other side of the substrate for the inside.

Over all construction is tongue-and-groove with doweled bracing in the back and a plywood back. A 25lb weight is hung in the back to keep it from tipping when opened with a full load of dirty sawdust laden clothes!

Oh and how could I forget the custom walnut handles? I made 42 in all for matching pieces which was a project in itself. I'll post that later…

Finish is Watco Danish Oil and Polyurethane varnish sanded, polished, and waxed. I spent more time finishing it than I did making it I think.

This is the nicest clothes hamper I've ever seen. Your wood choices are spot on. Very well done.

Very impressive! Shows a lot of dedication to make that many handles when most would have settled on one. Well worth the effort.

That is a clever design for a hamper storage unit and you did a great job in the making it.

Thanks all for the comments! I'll post a blog later on how I made the handles. I'm sure some are wondering how much work it is, but it surprisingly isn't too bad, and definitely worth it!
