    There's nothing wrong with utilitarian projects. Most of us start with those anyway, I believe. I've made salad spoons, letter openers, and towel holders. You can see some of them in the projects section, if you like. Before I was able to build my shop I worked in a 6 X 18 attached storage room that had lawnmowers, bicycles, etc. It use to take an hour just to move everything around before I could get started. If you get a chance, show us what you've done so far. Thanks.

    Thanks oscorner! Unfortunately, my projects up to this point have been utitarian in nature and most for my parents (to solve various storage/organizational problems). My wife and I had our house built a couple of years ago, and I'm just getting around to setting up shop. I just wish I knew what I would've needed for a decent shop before we had the house built! As it is, my shop will most likely occupy a small area in my basement about the size of a 1 car garage split up between two adjoining rooms. For right now, everything is in the garage, but the seasons are just too extreme to work in there on a regular basis. I'm looking forward to a refinish project my mom has - it will involve refinishing a coffee table and replacing three tile panels in the top with (hopefully) some nicely figured wood. Also, I was planning on a new bookcase for her. Then there's the garage reorganization project for my dad, the landscaping for our house, and - of course - I have to squeeze my alotted fishing excursions from spring through fall. Since it's too cold to do anything in the garage in the winter, you now see why I need to set up shop in the basement! I don't have time during the better months to do any real woodworking!!!

    Hopefully, more to come from my infancy staged shop this year!

    That snow put such a nice frosting on all those trees around you place, Jim. It must be great to be nestled in the woods like that!

    Thanks Karson. You might have cought it before I fixed it. I use Kodak Gallery and it can be tough to cut and paste the URL at times. I think my problem was a couple of "0"s that should've been "O"s. I think it's OK now - I can see the pics and others have commented on them. Are they coming up for you?

    Muddler I noticed that you tried to post some pictures. What you need to do is upload the pictures to a website like flickr.com I have some at www.flickr.com/photos/karson Then you right click on the picture and go to propertys and it will show you a web address. Cut that address and paste it into your message but put a ! before the address and a ! after the adddress. You can click on formatting codes when posting messages and it will give you what you need.

    Welcome to Lumberjocks;
    and yes I am thankful for the amount of snow we got. I am arriginally from Southern I'll. Where we always getalot of rain and Ice and very litlle snow. I moved to Jackson Michigan for about twenty years and became very familiar in 1978 with what snow really was. I drove a 1974 Ford pickup at the time and was in Jackson for three days before The storm hit. It covered my truck completely, where it took three days to dig out to the road. I Love the snow and all its wanders. Moved to Wisc. back in 1998. Planning on staying where we are at for a long time.
    Hope to see some of your projects and see how you work on your wood.
    Thank you for your comments, and again Welcome to LumberJocks
