Project Information

My wife and I always wanted a small flock of chickens. I started this back in April and it took me about 6 weeks working in the afternoons and weekends. I had no idea how much work this was going to be when I started, but when it was finally completed, i can tell you it was well worth it. We have 15 hens, two roosters and three guineas. Getting between 6 and 10 eggs everyday (can't eat em fast enough so we've started giving them to our neighbors).
This a cool project to do if your neighbors don't mind hearing a rooster (or two) crow every morning. Plus you get the added benefit of great fertilizer from the chicken litter.
I will gladly help in any way I can if you decide to take this project on. :)

Now that's living right there! Excellent job on the build.

I have a friend that is considering chickens and have passed this on to him for inspiration.

Eggs have the single best protein (in the world) that a human can eat. I think if i ever lived outside the city I might do something like this just to get those eggs!!!

Good looking coop. I think I saw a vented gable. Very important to keep the air moving through. Cold doesn't seem to bother them but heat can kill em quick. We started our small flock in the spring of 09 and have loved having them around. Oh, those roosters will crow all day some days. Just ask our napping three year old.
I posted a very standard coop a little over a year ago. I had to add a heavy wire screen door to cross vent in the summer. It was funny, anytime the birds were inside on the hot days, they stood in front of the door like they wanted into the yard. They get to the yard a couple hours before sunset. That way they get to eat bugs and etc in the yard but they don't get too far nor do they get on the porches or patio to do their business.
Great looking work, you'll love em all year long. Have fun,
BTKS
