Project Information

I had the opportunity to to make this bookcase that was dimension specific (84"x30"x12") for a new client who in their search was unable to find said feature. Per my wife's FB wall, "................ wonders if anyone in Portland knows anyone who makes custom furniture for reasonable prices? the bookshelf we want apparently doesn't exist, for less than $1200. we want a LOW, but LONG shelf - about 3-4 feet tall and 6-7 feet long." she lead them to one of my photo links and I was contacted. When I met with them to go over options I learned that they also wanted something that was on the dark side to fit well with their home. I recommended going with Cherry and though I don't usually put color on Cherry I used Minwax Early American oil stain and topped it off with sprayed on simi-gloss Valspar precat Lacquer. I delivered it to them yesterday and they were really very pleased with the final product, "It's Perfect!"... and that it came to them in under 2 weeks…I love it when the customer is pleased like that. Oh, they were also happy with the price, I did save them some money…

This bookcase shows off your craftsmanship in wood and design. It is not ornate - just classic. I love it, and the cherry is my favorite. Is it all solid cherry, or did you use some cherry plywood? We have a sheet of cherry plywood that I am saving for a cabinet in my cherry kitchen (originally built in the late 50's, and all cabinet doors are bookmatched).

Karen and Bill…...Thanks for you comment! I used solid cherry where I needed to, all edges etc. however, solid cherry for the entire project was cost prohibitive, so yes I did use PW, and heck even that was costly these days >.<... I also most always up the standard of 1/4" PW for the back to 1/2"...for the small additional cost it is worth it in the enhanced stability and longevity of the piece. I love cherry too and will be looking forward to seeing how rich this bookcase will become with the exposure to light…

Thanks Brian, good luck on your bookcase…

Travis, very nice work on this bookcase. I'm about to attempt one of similar style. How did you handle the face frame to side panel detail in pictures 2 and 3? did you mitre the face frame and end panel? I don't see a joint anywhere and it looks thicker than 3/4. Thanks!

Cheyenne, thanks for your comment… yes, that is a mitered corner at the front of the end panel…1 3/8 wide on the face. I was really after a clean look for that corner and the miter worked out well…
