Project Information

The third in my Impossible series is a box. 152mm x 92mm x 58mm. Made from an unknown wood, probably Luan (LJ's please help me positively identify) With 6mm thick walls. It has integral wooden hinges with brass pins, pics 3, 4 and 6, inspired by SPalm and integral lipping (pic 2). The Impossible pattern is made from Ebony, Padauk and Pau Amarello set in Maple. The 'way up' it is set is to best display the pattern from inside with the lid open. Finish is wax over Sanding Sealer.

Enjoy

Beautiful box, Martyn! I love the way you did the hinges. The finish also makes the grain and colors of the different woods really shimmer. Another wonderful job. You really do incredible work!

WooHoo. You did it! Sweet. 1/4 inch thick.
So please tell us, how did the drilling go and how do they work?

Love the top too. It looks great.

Steve, the drilling was fraught and they work up to 90°. I experimented on a test piece with 100° opening but I didn't like what it did to the gulleys. I'll have to put another pic in but the brass pin is totally enclosed at the end, stopping it from emerging at a later date. Due to grain direction and less than optimal timber selection they are not as strong as they could be with, say, Ebony or Maple. I will continue with the experiment though and post improvements as and when. Thanks for the inspiration and collaboration on these hinges.

Boy Martyn, you are a glutton for "cross-eyed-projects" but they sure do look good! I'm impressed!

I've got another idea for another cutting board but it will have to wait till after my next show as I'm too busy getting stuff ready for the showing.
