Project Information

I recently completed this chest/cabinet for my wife as an anniversary present. This was based off of a picture of a James Krenov cabinet that he built in the late 80's. The upper cabinet and lower sides are made from Sapele. All of the upper section is made from the same board to maintain color and gran consistency. The front and back are book matched as well as the sides. The lower section was cut from 1 board allowing the gran to run continuously around the piece. The inner drawers are made from zebrawood, and all of the pulls are made from lacewood. The legs and remaining pieces are made from hard maple.

That is stunning. The flow of the piece is amazing on its own but the consistent grain pattern adds even more. Beautiful job on this…I am sure the wife will be very pleased!

That's a beauty!

I love the attention you paid and the thought you put into the layout of the grain, as well as the bookmatching. Certainly a detail that raises this piece up a notch.

Excellent work. I'll be anxious to see what else you'll be posting!

Exquisite craftmanship and stunning choice of timbers. The Sapele looks rather dark in the photo. Did you stain it?

The entire project is finished only with 4 coats of pure Tung oil. Thank you to all for the kind words.

Reeps, you might make the acquaintance of http://lumberjocks.com/SST as he is also a Krenov fan!

If 'sexy' could be used to describe Krenov, I would say that piece is it!
