Project Information

I asked Douglas Bordner to do some photo editing for a web site I have been planning with Lee Jesberer. I e-mailed a bunch of photos and had Douglas remove the background from them. I'd tried this myself and decided I didn't have time to learn the tricks of the trade. Shortly Douglas was sending them back and, boy oh boy, are they great. It really helps to show off a piece of furniture to have the photo reworked to show it at it's best. It even better than shooting with all the lights and backdrops. I have those but it doesn't always come out just as I planned. I e-mailed Douglas and asked what he would like me to build him for his work. this is what he asked for.

The fence is made of soft Maple. The body is 1/2 inch thick and 14 inchs long. The under fence is also 1/2 inch thick and has a relief cut on the edge to prevent a shaving from hanging up while jointing. The bull is original pyrography and is based on my collection of photos that I shot while I lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I test drove it on a #7 and a#5 and got square edges on both. Now, Douglas, all we need is to get you a #7 or #8 so you can joint with the best of them. Enjoy it my friend, you earned it fair and square.

I forgot to mention Carleen's involvement with this project. She was looking for a piece to do a sample of some dye she was mixing and came and showed me the color on the blank for this piece. So that is why the back is sorta red. Adds a nice contrast

Hi Tom;

Few points:

1: Fabulous job

2: Beautiful art work:

3: Excellent workmanship

4: You dun a nice thing, George !!! (this came from a cartoon somewhere)

Tom and Carleen;

This was a very nice thing you did to show your appreciation to Douglas. When I first contacted Doug, to see if he could help us, he was eagerly onboard, before I finished asking.

Just goes to show the bonding going on on this special website. (thanks to Martin, and Ms. Debbie)

This really is a beautiful, practical peice of art!

Don't worry about that equity Charlie, we were working this as Time Dollars. I figure Tom's got about ten hours on account, twenty minutes per photo. Tom better get busy and build 30 new things for knockout. I won't cheat him.

This is a beautiful tool. I find a lot of enjoyment in using an elegant tool.

I love trading work! In almost every case, both people feel like they got a good deal.

Thanks everybody for the kind words. I just looked at another post and found out there is a computer program that can almost do the same thing. I didn't know those exist, well maybe I thought of it but not affordable to common folks. I still do the art work with a pencil and paper then transfer it to the wood and do the actual woodburning one mark at a time. I've had some people who think I have some way to push a button and do these, it ain't so easy.

Magnificent artwork. Looks like alot of hours into that bull. Maybe you can have an iron made so next time you can stamp it, lol.

I've been using photoshop to edit my pics as of late and think there coming out pretty good. You really only need to master the magnetic lasso. You can probably find a free trial version on the web.

Thanks Chris, I just don't have time to learn another program. I'm still working on SketchUp and a website program. Actually the bull didn't take as long to do as it did to learn to do it. But it is a lot of little marks.
