Project Information

Hi all. This is my newest "negative space design" and i need some help. I wanted to take the "whirlwind" into the bowl at the center. The decoration at the bottom is exactly the "same pitch or speed" as the whirlwind outside., but I think people have trouble seeing that. Does the design appear to belong in the bowl? Or are you wondering why it is there? Somedays I like it (no I cannot make more openings to make 6 swirls or more..it's too tiny a space) and other days I think I should make a new plain bowl. Artist folks: whatcha think?
Please ignore the fishing line holding it steady. Thank you

I'm not an artist, but I like it. It's the eye of the storm.

I have to agree with nailbanger2, It does look like the eye of the storm.
I really like it! I don`t think I would change a thing!

Although I know it's the same swirl as on the back side, I have trouble seeing it. It seems a bit out of place to me. It's a very nice piece, however.

First, let me say it's a beautiful piece… no two way about it.

But…. I agree with you that the center swirl, to the naked eye, appears to be out of sync with outer bands. I think it is because the rim of the bowl breaks the pattern.

I don't know if I can explain this clearly, but I think what needs to happen is for the inner swirls to be slightly longer, sweeping back more rapidly as they move away from the center, so at their ends they visually match the angle of the outer swirls.

thanks all..hey Charlie, thanks for the thoughtful comments. I think I understand..the "speed is exactly the same, but in the confined space it doesn't look it..so exaggerate the speed..make a faster pitch..I might consider that..I am so on the fence, I thought I'd get ideas from more folks..Right now I'm at the wall of the bowl & cannot go further..maybe I will have to make another bowl! If one could go from rim to center, these decorations would line right up with the swirl on the rim…...decisions! decisions! yikes

There is no way I'm going to critisize this. You may have a valid point about the design--but
-Awesome work!

This is nice and good constructed. I have an ongoing whirlpool spiral design. and I have experience the same with the center. I just continue the way to the center and make it solid by making an arc connecting the center to the last bit… that is equal to the radius of the last piece circle with the center located in the circumference.. (Hard to explain) Just take a good look on the design and it is okay if you will copy it.

Suggest the inner part of base of the bowl should already be segmented. Turning the base will have like an hourglass base…

Keep it up.

I agree with Charlie58, if you elongate the top of the 4 swirl openings to be more of the same direction as the rest of the swirl, it will integrate the pattern.

Wonderful piece as it is, but this little detail will put it over the top!

That is a cool piece. Could you add a bottom and side view?. I'm having trouble visualizing how it came to look like that or how high it is. I think it is flat with halfway cut through grooves on the back to give it the pattern.
The center design looks good the way it is but in dwelling on it, I wonder if the grooves in the center had a more of a hook on the outside edge to give the impression of "catching up the to the curved lines" on the outsde of it? Like a little alignment along the diameter at that point…...is that even clear???

Thanks Bert, but we are talking apples and oranges here. This is not segmented. It is one of my new negative space designs. Appreciate the thought tho..

I can't give you technical advice Michelle, but I can say that I think it is really pretty. Turning wood is something I have yet to try and it is so fun to see your beautiful creations!

I can see it both ways. I really like the piece… and the center as it is has sort of an ambiguous feel to it. If the center was solid, it certainly would change the whole 'feel' of the piece. Maybe it comes down to the eye of the beholder. The peculiar thing is that for me, looking at the thumbnail gives a totally different impression than that of the larger photo (the swirls look tighter somehow). What is the size of the piece? Nice work!

Incredible for any turner. You better put a patent on it or your idea's gone.

I like it alot. I think it is difficult for anyone who has not made one to offer an opinion. (but I will do it anyway) What would it look like with half the outer spirals and less pitch to them? or only 2 less? or an equal number of spaces on the inside ring? Just thinking with my keyboard here…..

I admire what you have done and look forward to the next ones. You make me take a different look at my own turnings. If you decide you don't really like it, I will adopt it!
