Project Information

I made this oak bed for a client last year. The legs were glued up from (2) 8/4 pieces of solid oak. I routed the mortises for the finials/feet before glueing up the leg blanks. The feet and finials were hand turned (no duplicator therefore each is unique).

The headboard and footboards were 3/4" ply with 8/4 caps and 4/4 bases with applied moldings. You can see how the panels/caps were tenoned into the posts in the fourth pic.

Rails were solid 8/4 with an additional 8/4 piece attached with screws to hold the slats.

I finished the bed with a coat of fresh shellac and multiple coats of Target's 6000 WB lacquer.

The bed was for a lady's granddaughter, and they loved it. The two girls (both are very young-pre-K and K) love it so much they still sleep in it together every night! It was a real joy to see them enjoy it so much!

It looks great. How are the rails connected to the posts?

Thanks yall for the compliments!

Chelios-I used the 'wrought' bed rail fasteners from Rockler. I like the fact that they mortise into the post/rail which takes the load off the screws. Once assembled they are completed concealed.

Nice looking bed. That gives me some ideas for the oak bed I want to make. Thanks for posting.
