Project Information

Have I mentioned that I hate hardware? I don't know what it is but steel and brass frustrate me. Although there is some truly beautiful hinges and knobs out there, and you really can't beat those heavy duty, silent drawer slides, or the adjustability of European hinges, something about them intimidates me.

So I have been experimenting with wooden hardware. Here is my first box with wooden hinges. It measure 6×7' x 3" high. The body of the box is poplar, with the hinges, lifter and feet in zebra wood. The top is a piece of trunk wood from my yard that I dried and resawed into veneer. I am not sure what the correct name of the tree is. We call it a Raintree. It is fairly soft when dry. They are very prolific and are quickly becoming a nuisance in our part of Florida along with the Orchid trees (again, I don't know the correct name).

The finish on the veneer started with tinted linseed oil, four coats of thinned polyurethane cover the whole box inside and out.

I have learned from these first couple hinges and the next should be better.

Overall a nice design, very pleasing to the eye and those hinges are SWEEET! You better keep making those. Those are real benchmarks of quality like dovetails.

The hinges look great and the grain continuation from the lower to the upper hinge shows the meticulous nature of your making them.

A great box.

Those hinges are really outstanding. And at first I thought the top was a really fancy burl.

Great box! Very nice design. I like the simplicity of the poplar, it really makes the raintree stand out. If only everyone knew what to do with those trees like you, they wouldn't be a problem in your area.

I do like those hinges. I've done wooden ones but they're always like finger joints. I'll be trying those out for a change.

Beautiful!

You're saving on the expense of brass, but even if it takes you longer. It's much nicer.

I can't see me spending 15, 20 dollars on a pair of hinges for a box. There brass not gold. But your's are wood and look great and give that box owner one more reason to keep it forever. Nice design and workmenship. I know it's not as easy as it looks.
