Project Information

Decorative Box

This project has been almost completed for over two years, but I had not put on the finish. So about two weeks ago I started the finishing. I used four coats of Tung Oil and one coat of feed-N-wax with sanding and steel wool in between coats.

This project was part of the Fine Woodworking Class I took two years ago from the William Ng School of Fine Woodworking in Orange County, CA. (http://www.wnwoodworks.com/). This course was five days of intensive study and hands on experience. Of course we spent a day and a half on just learning to sharpen our hand tools correctly. I still use many of the skills taught in this class for all my woodworking projects.

The wood is Mahogany and Maple and the project was designed to teach us to use many different power and hand tools together to create this box. Safety was the watch word from day one and we learned safe operation of all the tools we used.

We used the Incra Router fence system to make the beautiful dovetails for the box. To this day I am still amazed at how great this joint looks. Of course while we were doing it, I just remember all the trouble we had. I think we learned about being precise with our measurements because if you were off it showed up right away.

I recommend this school to anyone from beginner to pro it is worth the time and money, and you could end up with a box, chair or whatever when you finish a class.

Great looking box. Love the Incra jig joinery - it looks so different from the normal joinery seen on boxes. Would love to have one, but….. Nice looking wood choices, too.

Great job!
