Project Information

I call them "gallows post" signs, but I guess it would be nicer to call them estate signs. Whatever! I straightened the 4×4s by hand planing one surface and then ripping it on a table saw. This operation reduced the 3 1/2" to about 3 1/4, but it was necessary to get the wood square and true so I could make a tight lap joint. I couldn't resist putting a few grooves and pyramid points on the ends, just to dress it up a bit.
I made the sign using 3/4" MDO and some sign hangers that I got from a sign supply in California. I cut out the outline based on a pattern that I traced from an old kitchen table from the 20s. I used One Shot lettering enamel (good stuff) to coat out the front and back. I gave it several coats with light sanding in between to get a bathtub like surface for the background. I also use One Shot for the pictorial. Do we have any Italian LumberJocks? They might get the message.

ogni cor serba un mistero--every heart contains a mystery? I admit I cheated and Googled this…is it close to what it actually means?

A great looking sign, I really like the ship.

Yeah, you got it right Mark. It is a line from Verdi's "Ernani", one of my favorites.
