Project Information

This is my first attempt at inlay, the stars were obviously easy, just drilled and plugged. The moon I did with an exacto and chisels. It wasn't as painstaking as I thought it would be, but then again it's not exactly intricate. The city silhouette was an idea I had that I thought was also going to be difficult but wound up being relatively simple. I just marked a line across a piece of purple heart as a depth gauge and just cut on my crosscut sled making sure I didn't go past the line, and used a dremel to put points on a few buildings. My dad pointed out that the curls in the maple look like city pollution and we had a good laugh. As always there are a few things I would like to do differently, like do a constellation on the lid, or an actual skyline of an actual city. and once I get my scroll saw running properly maybe throw a bridge in there or something for added pizzazz. Thanks for looking!

What a great eye-catching combo of woods, and very creative design….I like this one very much! Thank you for sharing : )

Here's a thought…
If you end up making another one, I think it would be really cool (especially if you had your scroll saw up and working) if you take it one step further and inlay the city-scape into the sides of the box, instead of applying it to the outside. If you had a long enough board to get all 4 sides out of, you could inlay the city first, and then miter your cuts so the city would match up and wrap flawlessly all the way around the box. Just an idea that came to mind when you mentioned the possibility of making another one in the future.

Very nice box! With the stars and moon, I actually thought that the skyline was outlined sandstone buttes and other geologic formations such as seen in the Southwest (Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, etc.). I really like the style of the lid with it hinging on pins. Great job!

Cool idea for a box. Nice execution as well. Can't wait to see what you can do when your scrollsaw is up and running.

Very unique! And you caught my eye with my favorite combo: maple and purpleheart. This cityscape is so cool! And don't sell yourself short on the inlay. No matter what you choose to inlay, it still takes some good planning and execution to get it to come out right, and yours came out fantastic. Plus, it fits into the whole theme of the box. I, too, ventured into "first-time" inlay on my latest box and was well rewarded for the effort.
